Na noite da quinta-feira, dia 13 de janeiro, aconteceu no Hollywood Palladium, em Los Angeles, Estados Unidos, a premiação do Critics' Choice Movie Awards, prêmio entregue pela BFCA, a maior associação dos críticos de cinema dos Estados Unidos e do Canadá. Apresentado pelos comediantes Paul Scheer e Rob Huebel, este ano os filmes que mais se destacaram foram "O Artista" (The Artist), do diretor Michel Hazanavicius, que levou cinco prêmios (entre eles melhor diretor e filme) e "Histórias Cruzadas" (The Help), de Tate Taylor.
A produção distribuída pela Walt Disney Pictures, "Histórias Cruzadas" (The Help) ganhou os principais prêmios da noite, como melhor atriz, para Viola Davis, melhor atriz coadjuvante, para Octavia Spencer, e o prêmio de melhor elenco. Outra produção distribuída pela Disney que se destacou foi "Cavalo de Guerra" (War Horse), que levou o prêmio de melhor fotografia.
A comédia romântica familiar, "Os Muppets" (The Muppets) concorreu na categoria de melhor canção original com três canções e a divertida música "Life's a Happy Song", de Bret McKenzie, foi a grande vencedora. Durante a premiação, o ator Leonardo DiCaprio (J. Edgar) entregou o prêmio Music+Film ao diretor Martin Scorsese (Living in the Material World: George Harrison), prêmio que foi entregue ano passado para o diretor Quentin Tarantino (Bastardos Inglórios), que foi o homenageado.

Os estúdios de Walt Disney concorrem apenas com dois filmes, "Histórias Cruzadas" (The Help) e "Cavalo de Guerra" (War Horse), ambos com cinco indicações cadas. Diferente dos últimos anos, a Pixar Animation Studios ficou fora categoria de melhor longa-metragem de animação.
Surpreendendo a todos, os filmes "A Invenção de Hugo Cabret" e "Meia Noite em Paris" ficaram fora da disputa de melhor filme e o filme "O Artista" saiu com o maior número de indicações, foram 12 no total. "O Espião que Sabia Demais" obteve 11, "A Invenção de Hugo Cabret" obteve nove, "Sete Dias com Marilyn" teve 6 indicações, "Histórias Cruzadas" e "Cavalo de Guerra" somaram cinco indicações cada. "Harry Potter e as Relíquias da Morte: Parte 2" e "Drive" conseguiram quatro indicações.
